For example, yes you can think of this as an image.

But you can also think of it as a contiguous string of length 480000 (400 * 400 * 3).

You can do shader operations in e.g. GLSL on this "texture" then read back the output "texture" and parse it as data, often non-8-bit data.

Yeah, you're exactly right. The Amiga and ST were a huge step up from the 8-bit machines before them. And titles like Sidewinder, Gauntlet 2, Leathernecks, and the original (16-bit) International Karate were all games I first played on ST. They were amazing to see. Loved them. 👍
