So excited to share our recent work trying to understand where future meltwater will go on Antarctica's ice shelves at #AGU21 - plus a plug for .@pangeo_data. Hope to see you tomorrow morning: https://t.co/N1xw2y3EUQ
HornOxx went down the YouTube rabbit hole but came back with the incredible story of the #SnowCruiser, built in 1939 to explore #Antarctica. The Snow Cruiser project eventually failed as it could not handle the terrain for which it was built!! Model in @SketchUp

NASA-supported Study Confirms Importance of Southern Ocean in Absorbing CO2
https://t.co/QKmp3Kop2R
Research shows the Southern Ocean (the continuous body of salt water around Antarctica) absorbs much more carbon from the atmosphere than it releases

Solar eclipse will be visible from Antarctica.
Hmm looks kinda familiar.....
😆😆😆
And there it goes. The last total solar eclipse until 4/20/2023 occurred this morning over Antarctica. You can see the elongated shadow swinging around the terminator of nightfall.
Totality lasted up to 1:54 in a path 260 miles wide. Berkner Island to Shepard Island. @MyRadarWX

It's #AntarcticaDay! If only every continent could be dedicated to knowledge and peace.
Since it's #AntarcticaDay: here is one of the earliest known depictions of the Ross Ice Shelf - before it was even called the Ross Ice Shelf! John Edward Davis of HMS Terror drew the "Great Southern Barrier" in 1842, while Ross's expedition was trying to find a way around it.

@archaeoraptor Cryolophosaurus was the first theropod found in Antarctica and was almost called Elvisaurus because of its pompadour shaped crest. They also have a hard time classifying this fella! It was thought to be related to Dilophosaurus but its now found to be unrelated
