When doing the shadows, I made sure to draw everything in blobs and chunks to look like they were done with paint brushes.

You know something that bothers me a bit in character design is when a character feels like they have a wig for some reason and i always try to look for workarounds.
Alien? Tentacle hair.
Robot? Solid metal plates.
Shark? Solid chunks of skin.
Etc
