#OTD in 1647, Maria Sibylla Merian was born in Frankfurt. She was one of the first naturalists to observe the life cycle of insects. Merian is also known for her beautiful scientific illustrations.
Roman cavalry helmet dated 3rdC AD found in Heddernheim, Germany. Made from iron with bronze decorations including four snakes it would've been highly polished with a large peak and cheek pieces (now missing). Helmet on display in the Frankfurt Archaeological Museum.
Died (alas!) on this day in 1598, in Frankfurt, engraver, editor & publisher Theodor de Bry. Brought images of the goings-on in the New World to a fascinated public in Europe. Here, a delightful cannibal barbecue. Fun times!
