1. His turn to evil wasn't an instant thing. It was a slippery-slope where he was dealing with intense grief, and manipulation from others.

In biblical times, ashes were used to express grief. Tamar, David's daughter, raped by her half-brother, sprinkled ashes on her head & tore her robe. The gesture was also used to express sorrow for sins & was symbolic of the sinful self dying & returning to dust.

I have used both examples. In the first two images Mann getting his hair cut shorter for the first time triggers his grief at losing his mom. In the second example Kevin asks Mann to tell the whole story so then we enter a long flashback sequence.
