Mosasaurs were a diverse group of marine reptiles that lived during the Cretaceous period. The largest grew to 17 metres. They went extinct 66 million years ago during the K-Pg event.

When the skeleton was first described, the tracheal cartiliage was misidentified as a dorsal (=on-the-back) fringe, which you can see in CR Knight's reconstructions of Tylosaurus in the 1899 paper & accompanying FR221 on display (& 's P15144!)
