I know i said i would do the background, but the reality-warp i had planned for it turned into a foreground thing again. It is hard to balance it to preserve the distortion without it looking just like compressions-artifacts, but i think this is too opaque.

also me: "oh my god you can flatten something to the foreground and then use a clipping mask to make it look like its coming out from underneath"

This one turned out mostly as planned, but the foreground was originally going to be flames. In the end, I preferred the water effect instead.
Once we landed on a composition they liked (below), I asked them more specifically about details:
- no character in the foreground, replace
- post-industrial-ish cityscape
- clouds
I did some pre-processing of the image to facilitate this for the next step

@johnnygoransson Such a charming drawing!! This would be my feedback, exaggerated the values a bit just to better explain the concept. You could also accentuate distance by using thicker lines for the foreground and thinner lines in the distant bg!

and finally... the tileset. boy gollyi iterated on this a fair bit and still didn't get satisfactoryr esults. now know that i needed to be more sparing in my use of certain brighter colors to differentiate foreground and background elements a bit better...
