Thought it'd be fun to see how I sketch backdrops in pixels. It's just a fat brush to get a sense of color, depth and shapes. Unfortunately I just keep polishing the sketch and save nothing so I have to use one unfinished BG and a different finished one, hah.

i honestly adore the hyper-realism pixel art done for the original monkey island. i know that they went for a more cartoony style later on, and i can respect that. but i loveeee the talent that goes into making realism look beautiful in PIXELS.

and you really need to zoom in to tell the difference.
Basically what happens is that it's running the 3D renderer at half-height, and stretching it out to the full height. So it has to render half the pixels.

2/6 Using single pixels allowed me the smoothness and softness of an oil painting. At 1x many people will prefer the version with single pixels. Anti-aliasing allows finer lines, more nuanced curves, & more detail. It looks more 'hi-def', and is good for 'mimesis and mannerism'.
