While not the best Pre-Crisis had to offer, it is a very fun design. Sticking with the tried and true red and gold, and a cool design of a n eagle on the chest plate, it is a fitting look to send off the original continuity Ares with.

I probably should've clarified that I meant the initial manga design and not just in general.

The eyes are more upturned, the nose is beneath the faceplate,
and the faceplate is a bit taller with wider vents than in the anime.

The OVA version is a little closer to this design.
