I obviously don't know what's in the depths of your soul but most likely the reason you think SMRPG looks dark and gloomy is because most of the famous areas people post are the ones that just are dark and gloomy. It's got plenty of bright and colorful sections too

Compare the amount of unneeded colors Dedede has compared to Mario in SMRPG

Both look as detailed but the 2nd one uses its palette a lot more smartly than the anti-aliased mess the first one is

And yes, I've heard the comparisons with SMRPG and DKC

One thing you'll notice in those games is how smaller the palette is for them, so they look super detailed without looking antia-aliased

As well as the lack of outlines that make them blend better with the background (2/3)

I made Zidane's face more monkeyish cause I kept forgetting he has a tiny face on a big head and it made more sense to me

I gave Steiner the crying face Bowser makes in SMRPG just cause it made me laff

5) Gonna continue the trend of weirdness. If SMRPG kids never get Geno, at least give them Boshi. Motherfucker is a hardcore Yoshi that doesn't give a fuck. Give him an aggressive moveset that makes him play like an underhanded Yoshi.
