The 60th Anniversary of the publication of John Updike's 'Rabbit Run'. Beatrix Potter's Peter Rabbit, trapped in Mr McGregor's netting was a, perhaps surprising, influence.
Updike's statement on the beauty of books was one of the motivating factors for my own publishing efforts.

The striped and shapely
Maple grieves
The loss of her
Departed leaves
The ground is hard
As hard as stone.
The year is old.
The birds are flown.
And yet the world,
Nevertheless,
Displays a certain loveliness
Suspect each moment, for it is a thief, tiptoeing away with more than it brings.

'A book is beautiful in its relation to the human hand, to the human eye, to the human mind & to the human spirit'. Updike's quote inspired my efforts. The 3 Longley's with a @colin_davidson painting. Colin's portrait of Michael. Armitage & Updike by Paul Wright. #WorldBookDay
What art offers is space - a certain breathing room for the spirit.

Here’s the awesome artwork for the month of August from A Child’s Calendar. The book was originally published in 1965, but was reissued in 1999 with new illustrations by the great #trinascharthyman. #johnupdike #kidlitart #childrensbook #art #books #beach
