The art in this cover is 'modern' Sonic concept art. They reused it for the game proper, with added soles for his shoes. The Sonic R album cover (dated January 21, 1998) pre-dates Sonic Adventure's unveiling by 7 months. This was Japan's first glimpse of Sonic's redesign.
