Maybe I’m just over or under thinking it, but the idea of unique species in different regions coincidentally evolving to have similar qualities already existed in Pokémon, and in a way that was much more interesting than Wiglett.

As much as I'm okay with Interpretation in Fan Art/Commissions. The most egregious thing about the stuff I see involving Checker is how much some Artists miss the mark, Either Intentionally or by mistake.

It really motivates me to make a Do & Not Do's of designing Checkers.
