@y2k_aesthetic Another key y2k Japanese artist was Mariko Mori, known for her work combining fashion design, large-scale installation, and multimedia tech.
It shared the y2k concept of speculating on the symbiotic relationship between tech & humans, as well as visual themes of organic design.
@y2k_aesthetic Of course, Japan had its own distinct variant of y2k design, influenced by prominent Japanese creators.
One such creator was Takashi Murakami, one of the pioneers of "superflat" - a style known for vivid color, flat shading, and chaotic, organic forms.
@y2k_aesthetic y2k-era rave flyers (esp in Europe) also incorporated Japan-inspired imagery.
A popular trope was the use of kana/kanji purely as a design detail, for "exotic" or "cool" factor - while historically important to y2k, this has raised some ethical debate in modern discourse.
@y2k_aesthetic The Designers Republic was one of the first Western y2k tastemakers to incorporate Japanese design into their work - their famous 1994 Emgire #29 cover featured "Sissy", a mascot character inspired by retro anime. She would go onto appear in their work throughout the next decade
@y2k_aesthetic Much of western y2k's fascination with Japan came from its reputation as a hi-tech nation - a perfect match for a design aesthetic with tech as its forefront.
The western "anime boom" of the late 90's was also well underway - its "cool factor" influenced y2k-era design and ads.

In the y2k era, a variety of tech had newly reached a point where it could be made truly portable.
With this boom came a lot of experimentation in ergonomics! Making the physical interaction between tech and user as natural as possible was a huge priority in designs of the era.
