OUGH I mostly just kind of go with it!! I think most of it comes from good side profiles and being able to show which head is tilting which direction. Hands near the face as well as just a show of what the atmosphere with with body language (Like is the kiss hesitant or familar)

You know, I think there is some symbolism going on here on the directions they are looking. Zack to the Left, Cloud facing Forward, and Sephiroth to the Right.

Also, I looked into artist Palow work it seems the character proportions are just their style. They just don't translate well into 3d I guess. Figured I check cause I was wondering if was down to the art direction like Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
