There actually is a canon female protagonist in the Persona series: Maya Amano! She joins the party in Persona 2: Innocent Sin, but becomes the main protagonist in the sequel Persona 2: Eternal Punishment. She's the 1st female protagonist & the oldest too (She's 23). It's canon.
