Unironically speaking, Coonskin is the film that I will forever remember Scatman Crothers the most for, and IMO the very best performance/role in his entire filmography. The true star of the film.
Don Bluth really deserves more recognition and a substantial retrospective of his work. He is one of animation’s greatest artists with an enviable filmography: THE LAND BEFORE TIME, AN AMERICAN TAIL, ANASTASIA, and, of course, TITAN A.E.

If you want more 'Seinen' with its demographic but still magical girl, there's also Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha. I can't vouch for it since I haven't actually seen it, but it was pretty much the Madoka Magica of its time during the early & mid 2000's. Highly praised at the time!
