Another trick for strong panel composition is to think in terms of foreground, middle ground, and background, instead of *just* foreground and background.

Look at how Milt Caniff creates depth in his panels with this technique.

Tried something different. You always see dope little clouds in space pictures so I tried to draw, or I guess paint, one. Strongly resisted the urge to have Superman in the foreground😂

Earth lines is inspired by ploughed fields but when I'm working on the foreground area, it becomes more about colour and texture interactions and abstract mark-making. The trees give focus, contrast and a sense of scale. Print sold out but cards available https://t.co/FDtE8nF9AR

slightly taller ratio and moving the foreground a little

The colours and textures are carefully chosen to give the illusion of recession through space. A steady, pastel background with the boldest colours in the foreground - vibrant pinks, yellows and sea blue. A rift in the land - https://t.co/ucG4ad9ocK

I always enjoy background gags, though I guess this one is in the foreground as well.

InDesign document. Vector illustration in the background, white text and vector objects placed in the foreground. 200% zoom. Same document. Screenshots taken to rule out quality of monitor.

btw I think this is being displayed incorrectly, I believe the helm actually hides the face/head mesh of the player character and shows the shade+spooky eyes and the face is currently in front of the helm foreground texture.
this is how the helm looks without anyone wearing it https://t.co/cScf4d02Au

Art friends, I need your help! I feel like the bowl of noodles aren’t really popping out from the table / bg. Any advice on how to distinguish the foreground/background? 🙏🏼 🙏🏼

So lately I've been using coloured outlines to distinguish the ”background” of a character's design from the “foreground”.

Honestly, how does it look? I'm looking to refine this style some more, maybe figure out other ways to integrate coloured outlines.

With this image, I really wanted to perfect the interaction of colours to give a glowing sense of light. I just love how the colours have come together in the sky; almost to give a real life 'photograph effect' with the textured art in the foreground. https://t.co/7Wrnp7Ufue
