The Big Sleep (1946) based on the 1939 Raymond Chandler novel- directed by Howard Hawks, screenplay by William Faulkner(!), starring Bogart and Bacall - all of whom found the plot so confoundingly complex, they tapped Chandler for guidance, who likewise couldn't make sense of it.
