Honestly avoiding stretching and such really just comes down to good UV practices. The only pixel-specific stuff comes from modelling to a grid (1 unit in 3D = 1 pixel) and then when UVing match the 1 unit > 1 pixel ratio. Keeping the model as boxy as possible helps planar UVing

The fur is always challenging to do because there are a lot of possibilities. Modelling strand by strand using curves? Using a Fur brush? Still, I haven't decided which method to use, but here you have a sculpt of what I'm going for.

Some friends and I started making avatars in for VRChat. Its amazing the customizability you can do everything to modelling your own hair. Its so simple to use and easy to get into using the Cats blender plugin.
