So it's a bit hard to explain in a tweet but basically I make one layer with a single color for the shadows, then duplicate that and paint over it with a couple tones and then layer them on top of each other. These layers are set to multiply mode typically.

3 months ago compared to now. How I created it. Did line work on the tablet. Added colors and blended. Added a layer of water paint on the character. Too dark so I adjusted the brightness, contrast, etc.Then added more water color for shadows.
