One eye kept having this slowly growing "plsmoke ring" of distortion, kind of like a drop of water on an LCD screen, but just at the edge. Super weird

Try soft-cell shading maybe. You get a hard line for shadows, but you also get some extra values in that have a softer brushed edge. It's like the in-between :)
