Archibald Motley Jr. was born in New Orleans #onthisday in 1891.
Motley was one of the first Black students to attend the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. A few years after graduating, the artist painted this portrait of his grandmother, Emily Sims Motley.
Screenprints by Myron Kozman (1916-2002)
Kozman was part of the first class of the New Bauhaus in Chicago in 1941, and later taught design & printmaking there. He moved to Wisconsin in the 1960’s to serve as head of design at the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design.
Experimental photograms by photographer Arthur Siegel (1913-1978)
Born in Detroit, Siegel was an early student at the New Bauhaus (later IIT) in Chicago. He later became head of the photography department there and was named president of the IIT Institute of Design in 1971.
