In #JapaneseFolklore, the now extinct Japanese wolf features as okuri-okami (or sending off wolf) who trails closely behind travellers, appearing to be sending them on their way and even guiding them to their destination safely. However, there's a catch...

#goodmorning on #FolkloreThursday This is Richard Doyle's "Water-Lilies and Water Fairies." What does this sort of thing say about the Victorian psyche? Simon Cooke finds something "curiously disturbing" in it! See https://t.co/J0IefzSZde
#FolkloreThursday The Thracian mares were a herd of man-eating horses in Greek mythology. They were said to be uncontrollable but I'd like to imagine them being riden into battle by the Amazons. @FolkloreThurs #greekmythology
The Cŵn Annwn were the spectral dogs of the Welsh otherworld. Associated with the wild hunt and both King Arawn and the psychopomp Gwyn ap Nudd. The howling of these hounds foretold death to anyone who heard them. #FolkloreThursday
In Wales Cŵn Annwn, the 'Dogs of Annwm', Lord of the Underworld, hunt the souls of the dead across the sky. According to tradition the howling of these dogs foretold death to anyone who heard them.

#FolkloreThursday Welsh folklore says Pembrokeshire Corgis, (beloved pets of Queen Elizabeth II) are gifts sent by the fairies. The little folk use them to drove their fairy livestock, ride as ponies, pull their carriages, & of course, as playful, loyal, charming companions.
A #pet for a fairy:
A fairy went a-marketing
She bought a little mouse
To take her tiny messages
To keep her tiny house.
All day she kept its busy feet
Pit-patting to & fro
And then she kissed its tiny ears
Thanked it & let it go.

Djinni live in all manner of places but a popular place is the shadows of tree, hoping to get out of the sun. So, when hiding from the sun yourself, watch your step and make clear your presence: Djinni are rarely forgiving of the insult of sitting on them. #FolkloreThursday
Kodama are the spirits of old trees in deep forests in Japan. Rarely seen as orbs of light or tiny vaguely human shapes, they are more often heard, as echoes that are just slightly oddly delayed #FolkloreThursday art @matthewmeyerart https://t.co/wKUGD2ckMf

This weeks #FolkloreThursday theme is trees and forests... which all fits rather neatly with my Dragons of the Dark Woods book 🙂 Anyway, here are a few of the forest’s stranger and scarier residents...
In Finnish mythology, Mielikki is the goddess of healing and protector of wounded animals. Tapio is the god of the forest. Together they live in a wooden castle deep in the forest where they watch over the wild animals.🎨Boris Vallejo/Julie Bell

Protector of uncultivated woods and wild places, the Roman god Silvanus loves things that grow at their own pace, whether field or forest. He protects against overbearing humans but also against wolves that might steal cattle, making him popular. #FolkloreThursday
