The Rance series has like all the anti-checkmarks of a VN for me... it takes place in a classic fantasy world, has a "justified rapist" protag, has gameplay, has no voice acting... But at the same time this series is pretty damn well-received so I've considered it here and there.

I would say the Shion one
Higurashi VN is my favorite piece of fiction alongside Umineko but I wouldn't go so far as to say Shion beat an entire cast
