The satirical scenes of William Hogarth (1697–1764) are iconic representations of 18th century urban life at a time of great socioeconomic disparity. This summer we investigate the ways he used humor, satire, and political commentary to agitate. https://t.co/uRKvkbVwL3
For #nationalpuppyday, enjoy Marie-Louise Le Sénéchal d’Auberville (1750-1834) of New Orleans and her fluffy dog. This pastel portrait was likely completed while the sitter lived in France from 1759 to 1764; perhaps the dog accompanied its young mistress… https://t.co/1QAIlSKVPo

The painter Angelica Kauffman astutely collaborated with engravers. Here a portrait of her engraved by Francesco Bartolozzi in 1780 and in turn her portrait engraving of J. J. Winckelmann of 1764 (see W. Roworth in September 2018 issue of Print Quarterly). #InternationalWomensDay

For Our Prime Minister. I'm reading AN HYMN TO MAY (1764). The Goddess's companion is Bacchus:
"Yet the lib'ral God disdains
French alike and Grecian Plains
And the mirthful Spirit sends
To his freeborn BRITISH friends.
Here he comes, all fresh and gay
Doing Homage to the MAY."
English surgeon John Abernethy (1764-1831) believed most diseases were due to digestion disorders, and so invented a digestive biscuit, similar to hardtack, still popular today! He also described congenital absence of the portal vein in 1793 (Abernethy malformation).
