日本では伊達政宗を連想するが、もともとは中国の李克用（856-908）をさす。唐末に精強な黒衣の軍団・鴉軍を率いて反乱軍を討ち、節度使（総督）になった隻眼の英雄だ。ライバルの軍閥・朱全忠が唐を乗っ取り後梁を立てたため憤死する。後に息子が後梁を討ち後唐を建國。太祖と諡された。
