Vernon Castle, who, with his fashion icon American wife Irene, was one of the most famous dancers of the 1910s, was born #OTD 1887 in Norwich. They dominated the dance world giving shows, exhibitions & classes. Vernon served in the RFC but was killed in an air crash in 1918.

Old Bill remembers 'Once Upon A Time' in this weeks' centenary Fragment, from The Bystander, 25 Dec 1918. Bruce Bairnsfather himself later owned the original of this drawing. It is now in the possession of the National Army Museum.
