And took my suggestion to start with the Watch, Death or Witch novels. Guards Guards is a treat.

Discworld. It's heavier towards comedy than other high fantasy but it can have horrific moments quite often as well, jumping between high, low and dark fantasy often. The volume of work can be quite daunting but they can mostly be read in any order. Going Postal is a good start.
