While Audubon was and is a controversial figure (also explored in the show), the book itself reminds us of the beauty and fragility of the natural world, with paintings of at least 5 now-extinct birds, like the Carolina parakeet.

Around 1820, naturalist John James Audubon declared his intention to paint every bird species in North America.

Between 1827 and 1838 was published. At almost 1m high (!), it featured 435 life-size, hand-coloured prints.

In 1807, Alexander Wilson approached the Library Company to subscribe to his American Ornithology, a 9-volume set. We signed up for 3 copies. The color plates inspired Audubon and are still stunningly beautiful.
