ooof, yeah that's a Bad sign. I err on the side of caution judging people because I sometimes struggle with consistency too, even on my favourite ocs. The moment you apply an overlay, darker colours can shift dramatically. But, it's their Job as an artist to be mindful of that

Then it's color layer time. This happens in a couple phases, add overlay, wash a solid layer of color over the whole thing to unify it, another overlay to emphasize and deemphasize as needed. It looks bad, but that's not the point.
