The 1st May 1851 was also the 1st birthday of Queen Victoria's favourite son Prince Arthur & this Winterhalter painting commemorates this event as well as the Great Exhibition. Arthur shared his birthday with his namesake & godfather Lord Wellington, who also makes an appearance.

On this day in 1845, Queen Victoria wrote in her journal that she had 'hung up Winterhalter's lovely sketch of Alice, in her costume, in our sitting-room'. I couldn't find the drawing but it's probably a sketch of this delightful portrait of toddler Alice in Georgian dress.
