I think they based Lance's FRLG design off of his anime appearance (in Gen 2) since he wears a leather jacket in Gen 1 and a black jumpsuit in Gen 2, save for the shoulders and cape. His initial anime design is more closer to FRLG, except for the hair, so I think that's cool.

He has some control over the wings that make his cape. He can flap them and use them to glide but he can't use them to fly.
The cape was actually inspired by the bloody sword costume from IdV.

I find it very useful to take some pervious work I've made, and then repurpose it by limiting the palette or changing the shape. The log for example was basically a tree trunk I made a month ago, turned to the side, put a hole, etc

Speaking of obscure games, I was suddently reminded of this 1991 top-down Amiga adventure game made in Italy: "Bit in the Magic Castle".
In the intro, the knight protagonist gets turned into a worm and has to crawl all around the castle to escape.
Weird, but interesting.
