An unloved girl put on her cloak & went to the river. She waded into the icy water, but was tugged back by a wolf, who told her to live. He found her strong medicine, rooms with a kind family, hearty food & the deep constancy of love from a dying old wolf.

Little Red Riding Hood was a fave tale of mine growing up because Little Red was a relatable kid heroine who wasn't a princess, the most beautiful or smartest, and didn't always listen to her mother. I loved my LRRH books growing up!

Perrault's early Red Riding Hood tale had a warning attached, advising well brought-up young ladies not to dally with dangerous beasts, lest they be swayed by the charms of a wolf in disguise.

In 1991, Beni Montresor (b. Italy 1926-2001) illustrated the Charles Perrault version of Little Red Riding Hood, referencing Gustave Doré's (1832-83) illustrations. Red's demise is macabre, but the final image of her intact & the hunter's silhouette gives hope
