Using a brush called "Blender Blur" (I think its a wet blend), I blend out the spots until they're smooth, and if there are any sharp edges like shadows of other petals, I leave those soft but not blended completely! I merge the layers and make a new one for the next petal.

Gotcha. So when I shade Angel I did a mix here of the stroke color and pink hues from his color scheme. I do a secondary layer and take a pen tool to get clean shapes and use a soft brush to erase the edges.

I keep ahold of a human musculature sheet for reference. I usually line the muscles or bone structure with a lighter shading tone, fade the edges a little, then do the actual shading, following what I think is the curvature of the back.
