I'm not sure if there's a name for this, but I've been referring to it as color channeling. Since I can't index colors like a pixel artist, I'm replacing the RGB channels instead.

not much later I became a comic-book-reading boy and encountered the X-MEN and the character Sunfire and learned that Japan was sometimes called “the land of the rising sun” and so assumed Charlie Daniels was referring to something Japanese though what I couldn’t possibly guess
