First, preliminary sketches to determine the composition, usually in b&w. It really helps when deciding on the early values to keep an eye on, as well as the primary/secondary focal points. If it's a difficult angle, I lay down a simple perspective grid.

Hmmm some good practice tips is understand like basic anatomy one I use a lot is this method for arms, I kinda just draw as I go without a reference which gives the character its own sense of being but do use ref to get the hang of basic perspective and flow of the body
