If you turn the armor part into a symbol and set the Blending to either Screen, Add, Substract, Difference, or Alpha, that symbol won't show up!

Alrighty!! Get ready for a long explanation haha
For the purple and orange, I use layer blending modes in photoshop,
I use "Hard light" and "Color dodge" with a soft brush and I pressed the pressure button so it wouldn't be too harsh.
