"flat" / "retro" / "modern" style still popular bc even more than doing "gross" or "wacky" 90s style per Ren & Stimpy, it was superficially easy to copy - just use lots of geometric shapes & sharp angles. easy to animate cheaply using vectors in Flash, too- so even better, right?
