五香屋休哉に漢学を、北方心泉に書を学び、茶道や書画骨董に通じ、北大路魯山人の才能を見出しました。
徳田秋声（1871年生）や泉鏡花（1873生）とは幼馴染で、後年に秋声が後輩の室生犀星を連れて燕台を訪ねています。
