He was born into an elite family of WASP background. He turned down Harvard to take a job in accounting, but left to be an engraver. He then started painting in watercolour. Spanish Steps (1883), Alhambra (c1883) & Village (1882-5)
They moved to Pusiano in 1880 & then Carella. There he painted in the mountains en plein air. He completed Ave Maria which won him a gold medal at the 1883 World’s Fair, Amsterdam. Pike & Roses (1882), Girl with Lamb (1882-3), Father is Dead (1882) & Shepherd in Love (1881-2)
