This delicate drawing by John Constable (1776-1837) probably depicts his wife Maria in the early 1820s. She was the love of Constable’s life and they had seven children together. He was heartbroken when she died of tuberculosis in 1828.

"When anxious, uneasy and bad thoughts come, I go to the sea,
and the sea drowns them out with its great wide sounds,
cleanses me with its noise,
and imposes a rhythm upon everything in me that is bewildered and confused."
Rainer Maria Rilke

On 26 December 1825, Constable drew Brighton Beach during a visit to his family in Brighton. The date is inscribed in the bottom left corner. The drawing was purchased with the assistance of the Felix Cobbold Bequest Fund.
