I freaking hate these two. Not their series or story, just the MS itself. Exia because, as a fanart hunter, you get really sick of seeing him. For every piece on one Gundam, Exia has 5! And Unicorn is just weird. Why transform at all? It's useless when not... Why not just be!?

Gundam was definteily made not just make giant robots more "real", but to specifically make robots like Getter Robo more "real". It's no coincidence it featured a trio of mechs, the Gundam, Guntank, and Guncannon, who all look suspiciously similar to Getter's forms.

Xenogears draws a lot from mecha anime—IIRC Takahashi and his son are even SRW fans—with some pretty obvious cues taken from Gundam, Macross, the Yuusha series, etc., and there's cognizant effort put into emphasizing size & scale.
