It's just quadballs in the sculpt mode! One for the base head, one ear, one eyeball, one for the nose/top muzzle, one lower jaw and one tooth. I just drag things around until I like the shape, and then merge and fillet the seam so it's smooth.

what i do is hard shade, then use the airbrush tool over the seam. it sorta gives it the illusion of strictly hard shading while having a much softerr blend to it

I added a single minus sign to the seam carving algorithm to have it target pixels with the highest gradient, rather than lowest, and the result looks like pouring water over a painting.
