To simulate dirt and rock, I basically made some mismatch particles and dashes. I then gave some of them an inner shadow to give the illusion that these are 3D particles with multiple surfaces like a rock would. It’s very easy to do and very effective.

Skimmers have unusually long lower bills to allow them to skim-feed over water surfaces while flying. Something I only realized today while sectioning? All of that underbite is keratin; the actual bone is the same length on both the upper and lower jaw!
