asks how did paired fins emerge over evolution? Fate mapping in the skate embryo indicates an ancestral mesodermal contribution to the jawed vertebrate gill arch skeleton. See recent paper with :

My brain is away with early Jurassic marine reptiles this so here's the mural I did of Rhomaleosaurus and friends for in 2018. We put this together pretty quickly - I wanted more fish and invertebrates but time wasn't on our side.

Gonna call this done. @/skumhuu 's Leviathantale featuring Oops God Of Reality: Legacy. He's a pikaia, once thought to be the evolutionary source of all vertebrates. (Zom is there too, for size. He's a Stygiomedusa Gigantea)
Original art in the bottom left is Sku's!! For size!!!

What a great end to the week! My student 's new paper is out now in ! We've been working for years on understanding modularity patterns in the vertebrate skull, but how do these patterns stack up within a species? Find out now! https://t.co/eR8vfVVFFM

Phylogeny is one of my favorite subjects. Well of course, I study it. But it also connects you to every species that has ever lived on Earth! I drew this vertebrate phylogeny in 2015 as an undergrad. It needs many updates... https://t.co/JW7e8Z1RRb

Thank you so much for this artshare!
Since fishes are the most diverse group of vertebrates, I figured they could use some representation here! I also draw dragons and other scaly things.

So brought up the concept of invertebrate Sonic characters, with a Big-inspired Tardigrade being one idea, and I wanted to try making one.

Getting it to at least look like the species while keeping a Sonic feel was a fun challenge, and I'm happy with the results!

Morturneria, an antarctic Aristonectine, sucks up krill resting on the bottom of some sea ice. Morturneria was a supremely weird filter feeder, sifting through sediment to feast on small invertebrates
