in some sprites, like the skull, it's essentially treated as a single set piece and hand painted.
the walls are modular- a few different angles of gradients, etc.. they're manually palette swapped and flipped / rotated for variety and for angles of lighting.
Tweaked the background so the monsters could get framed better in the scene, tweaked the monster sprites to look ok when flipped/rotated, improved the frog knight's pose, came up with silly names for the enemies.

They replaced older room designs and rotated the entire dungeon by 90 degrees around the origin. Why? No idea.
But some scrapped rooms still exist, like in the images below.
1) Collision mesh + objects
2) Visual mesh
3) Collision and visual meshes showing the rotation

come to think of it... the passage from R&D to chunky's room would also make sense if we assume you get _turned around_ when you climb up the tube from Testing to R&D. i wonder if it was rotated as an oversight, or just done to make the layout easier on the level designers
