Yeah that's what they used to do for the artwork in the Dreamcast Era of Sonic. Starting with Sonic Rush, the art got more detailed and "realistic" with Sonic's proportions, so no more stretchy rubber like shoes or cool looking posing

I don't fully agree, but I have always thought the proportions in MvC3 look weird, compared to the characters' 2D versions, or even contemporary SF4 versions.
