天正15（1587）年の10月1日、豊臣秀吉が京都・北野天満宮で「北野大茶会」という、史上稀に見る大規模な茶会をひらいたという故事に由来して、日本茶の飲料メーカー・株式会社伊藤園が制定。同記念日は、日本茶の魅力を広く人々に伝えることを目的としている。
