Lots of great ideas in this thread about lighting and design schemes. I'll just add that both of these can help set the tone for each scene, and show transition between scenes. If you're not sure of colors, you can color normally and add color filters/layers.

The best comparison i can make is using painting photoshop filters on images, at least the photoshop filters are more creative.
